Papers, 1789-1944, bulk 1861-1865.

The bulk of these papers consist of letters (originals and transcripts) and diaries (transcripts) related to William C. McLean's military service during the Civil War. The letters contain good descriptions of the battles at Gettysburg and Kenessaw Mountain (Ga.), and the Union army invasion of Atlanta. In addition, McLean described the pillaging and burning of towns en route to Savannah under the command of General Sherman; and subsequent march through the Carolinas where Union forces skirmished frequently with Confederate troops under the command of General Johnston. The diaries compliment the letters by providing a brief summary of daily activities.
